Gregory Walker, 29, fell dead Saturday morning while competing in the 10-kilometer Azalea Trail Run in Mobile, authorities and family members said.

Walker, who owned Southern Tires Inc. in the Whistler area of Prichard, died of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, an abnormality of the heart muscle, authorities said.

'He was thought to be in perfect health,' said Erin Walker, the runner's wife, though as a teenager Walker had been diagnosed as having an enlarged heart.

Walker finished the physically challenging ATR last year, finishing in 57th place in the 25-29-year-old class of runners.

After another runner said he saw a man collapse during the race and appear to be seriously ill, a Mobile Register reporter called Azalea Trail Run official Peggy Olive and the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department seeking further information. The ATR official refused to discuss whether anyone collapsed and said she didn't know anything about it. Mobile-Fire Rescue Department medics worked the race, but a department dispatcher told the reporter that there were no reports of fatalities.l "

Always get a check up before embarking on a fitness program thats outside your normal routine. Greg was probably very unlucky but the machine we called the human body can break down, especially if we push a little too hard for too long.
