Saturday, March 25, 2006 News - Scotland - Edinburgh - Heat is on in runner's marathon training News - Scotland - Edinburgh - Heat is on in runner's marathon training: "A FORMER police officer has found the perfect way to prepare for the world's most gruelling marathon - by sitting in a sauna everyday in full running gear.

Donald Sandeman, 50, is taking part in the 154-mile Marathon des Sables through the Sahara to raise money for cancer care charity Marie Curie.

The part-time taxi driver from Fairmilehead, who retired from the police last year, has worked out a strict training regime in the run-up to the six-day race which will see him competing in temperatures of up to 50C.

Mr Sandeman, who completed the 54-mile Thames Meander last month as part of his training, contacted Edinburgh Leisure to ask permission to use its sauna at Warrender Baths - where he has sat in 30 degrees, wearing his full backpack and running gear, for one and a half hours every day for the past six weeks.

He also goes for daily runs on the Pentland Hills carrying a 24lb pack and trains on sand dunes in Gullane.

Mr Sandeman, who is married with three children and lives in Pentland View, decided to take part in the race, which starts on April 9, after completing more than ten marathons over the past decade.

He said: 'I am turning 50 this year and I retired from the police after 30 years service. I have done quite a lot of regular marathons "

Amazing way to train. I've heard that as you get older you get wiser in the way you train. I think Mr Sanderman is unique but I could be wrong. Any one else train this way?
