Drinking on the Run is Hard

So how much water do you drink for a marathon?

You try not to drink too much because it can be heavy and you don’t want to stop for a leak every 5k, but I don’t know, I can’t say. Usually I’d drink the same before a 5k race as before a marathon. So I’d drink a litre before a 5k and I’d drink a litre before a marathon but what I did I stopped at every drink station, I actually stopped, slowed down and sometimes walk. So I lost a lot of time getting drinks because I didn’t want to take the risk of being cocky, because in the long run, like every Sunday I don’t drink any water but I thought no, I don’t want to hit the wall and it’s my first marathon. I just want to be sensible. So every 3 or 4k or 5k I stopped and slowed down to have a drink of water.

So you practice drinking water on the run?

I don’t in any of my runs, when I’m training but the marathon I did, I just wanted to be safe. I didn’t want to hit the wall. But even running slow its hard to drink water. You don’t drink water like that properly.

If you had practised drinking water on the run would you have been able to increase your time a bit?

No. Out of a cup it goes everywhere, while trying to drink it’s spilling all over your top. I drank, I do admit I did drink a lot of water like at the stations I got as much from the cup as I could after it was spilled over my top. I got about half of each cup.
